To enable secure and efficient file access for your website or server, creating an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account is often necessary. Fortunately, the process of setting up an FTP account is straightforward and can be easily accomplished within your cPanel control panel.

Please note: For FTP functionality to be available and operational, it must first be enabled on your server. If you encounter issues, please refer to the following guide: How do I enable FTP for my server and users?

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an FTP Account in cPanel

Follow these detailed steps to successfully create a new FTP account:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account. Begin by accessing your cPanel interface using your provided credentials.

  2. Navigate to the "FTP Accounts" interface. Once logged in, locate and click on the "FTP Accounts" icon, usually found within the "Files" section of your cPanel dashboard.

  3. Enter your desired username. In the designated "Log In" text box, type the username you wish to assign to this new FTP account. This will be part of the credentials used for connecting via FTP.

  4. Select the appropriate domain. From the "Domain" dropdown menu, choose the domain name that this FTP account will be associated with. This ensures the account is linked to the correct website or project.

  5. Set and confirm your password. Enter a strong, unique password in the "Password" text box and then re-enter it in the "Password (Again)" text box to confirm. Remember to choose a secure password for optimal security.

  6. Define the FTP account's home directory. In the "Directory" text box, specify the home directory for this FTP account. This determines the highest level of access the FTP user will have.

Please note: The directory you specify defines the new FTP account’s top-level access. For example, if you enter "example" in the Directory text box, the FTP account will be able to access the /home/$user/example/ directory and all of its subdirectories, but not directories above it.

  7. Set a disk space quota or select unlimited. You can either specify a disk space quota (in MB) for this FTP account or select the "Unlimited" option if there are no restrictions on storage usage.

  8. Click "Create FTP Account". After reviewing all the details, click the "Create FTP Account" button. The newly created account will then appear in the "FTP Accounts" table, confirming its successful creation.
