Introduction

To facilitate secure and efficient file management on your web server, creating a dedicated File Transfer Protocol (FTP) account is often necessary. This process allows specific users or applications to access and modify website files. Fortunately, establishing an FTP account is a remarkably straightforward task that can be easily accomplished within your cPanel account.

Important Note: For FTP functionality to operate correctly, it must first be actively enabled on your server. For detailed guidance on how to enable FTP for your server and its users, please refer to the following resource: How do I enable FTP for my server and users.

Procedure

Follow these steps to successfully create a new FTP account within your cPanel interface:

  1. Begin by logging into your cPanel account using your credentials. This will grant you access to your hosting management tools.
  2. Navigate to the "Files" section and locate the "FTP Accounts" interface. This is where all FTP-related configurations are managed. Screenshot showing the FTP Accounts interface in cPanel
  3. In the designated "Log In" text box, enter the desired username for your new FTP account. This will be the unique identifier for logging in.
  4. From the "Domain" drop-down menu, carefully select the domain with which this FTP account will be associated.
  5. Proceed to enter a strong, secure password in the "Password" text box, and then re-enter it in the "Password (Again)" text box to confirm.
  6. Specify the FTP account's home directory in the "Directory" text box. This defines the root access level for this particular FTP user.

Please Note: The "Directory" text box determines the highest level of directory access for the new FTP account. For example, if you input "example" in this field, the FTP account will be restricted to accessing the /home/$user/example/ directory and all of its subdirectories, preventing access to other parts of your server.

  7. Set the desired disk space quota for this FTP account. You can enter a specific value in megabytes (MB) or select "Unlimited" for unrestricted storage.
  8. Finally, click the "Create FTP Account" button. Upon successful creation, the new account details will be displayed in the "FTP Accounts" table below, confirming its active status.
