Introduction

To facilitate file transfers and provide secure access to your website's data, creating an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account is often necessary. Fortunately, cPanel makes this process straightforward and efficient, allowing you to quickly set up new FTP access points for your users or applications.

Please note: For FTP functionality to be available and utilized, it must first be enabled on your server. For detailed instructions on how to enable FTP for your server and users, please refer to: How do I enable FTP for my server and users.

Procedure

Follow these steps to successfully create a new FTP account within your cPanel interface:

  1. Begin by logging into your cPanel account using your credentials.
  2. Navigate to the "Files" section and click on the "FTP Accounts" icon to access the FTP management interface.
  3. In the "Add FTP Account" section, enter your desired username in the Log In text box. This will be part of the full FTP username (e.g., [email protected]).
  4. From the Domain dropdown menu, select the specific domain under which this FTP account will operate.
  5. Create a strong, unique password for the new FTP account. Enter it in the "Password" text box and confirm it by re-entering it in the "Password (Again)" text box.
  6. Specify the FTP account’s home directory. This directory defines the highest level of access the FTP user will have.Screenshot of FTP Accounts interface

Important Note: The "Directory" text box establishes the new FTP account's top-level directory access. For instance, if you input "example" into this field, the FTP account will be granted access to the /home/$user/example/ directory and all its subdirectories, but not to directories above it.

Set a disk space quota for the FTP account to manage storage usage. You can enter a specific value in megabytes (MB) or select the Unlimited option if no restrictions are needed. Finally, click the Create FTP Account button. The newly created FTP account will then be listed in the "FTP Accounts" table displayed below.
